Susan’s love for art started when she was a young child, originally from Connecticut, now located in Melbourne, FL. This love has carried her from grammar school through High School art classes to receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from Paier College of Art, Inc. Then she segued into a first career for 16 years in print advertising, logo and package design at the former Ames Department Stores, Inc., and now into a second career of fine arts. “My very first memory of painting was in kindergarten class and I am standing in front of an art easel and painting some marks on the paper. I knew then that I was going to be an artist when I grew up.”
Severely hearing impaired since birth, Susan is visually more attuned to her surroundings and she paints her impressions of what she sees and feels into her landscapes, seascapes, and local wildlife. Susan is an avid birdwatcher and a keen observer of their patterns of behavior. Susan’s styles of painting are mostly in traditional realism and representative looseness of subject matter. She employs several watercolor techniques such as salt to get spontaneous blooms, stretch wrap and wax paper that creates wonderful textures on Arches watercolor paper. She continues to grow her painting knowledge by currently taking classes in Exploratory Watercolor and Acrylic Contemporary Abstract art with two local award-winning artists, Bobbi Q. Brown and Pat Bowlds, and by attending several Watercolor and Acrylic workshops with renowned, award-winning artists both in Connecticut and Florida.
Susan’s fondness for animals allows her to imbue the personality of each pet in their commissioned portraits to the owners’ delight. She also creates art on a minuscule scale by creating landscapes, flora and fauna on miniature canvas paintings currently for sale in galleries located in both Connecticut and Florida.
Susan has won many awards including a Merit Award at the Students Art Exhibit located at the Illustrators Gallery, NYC, NY while in college. Recently, she has won merit awards during the Brevard Watercolor Society’s annual “Splash” art event. She is a participant in outdoor fine art shows including the Melbourne Arts Festival and ArtWorks.
She is a member of many local Florida Art Associations including Brevard Watercolor Society; Florida Watercolor Society; Strawbridge Art League; Brevard Cultural Alliance, and Connecticut Art Galleries including Lyme Art Association; Essex Art Association; and consignment membership at the Connecticut River Artisans. She currently has her artwork shown in local fine art galleries: Eau Gallery, Eau Gallie Arts District; Strawbridge Art League & Gallery, downtown Historic Melbourne; and the Art Gallery of Viera, at the Avenues.
Susan has been a year-round resident of Brevard County since June 2013 when her husband and her 14-year-old cat moved to Melbourne, due to her husband’s job transfer.
“Watercolor and Acrylic are my mediums of choice because of the vibrant colors and the moods that can be invoked from these paint mediums. I love painting Landscapes, Seascapes, and Local Wildlife because of the ever changing nature that surrounds us and I want to capture the essence of it.”
